Why ChatGPT doesn't recommend your SaaS (and how community threads fix it)

Pay attention to the *reasoning* the assistant gives, where it offers any. "Tool X is known for Y" tells you what the corpus thinks about Tool X. If your name doesn't appear at all, the corpus has no opinion of you yet — which is a fixable problem, just not by writing more landing pages.
Cause 1: Your category isn't discussed where it should be
Some categories are well-discussed on Reddit and Hacker News. Some aren't. If yours falls into the second bucket, the corpus is genuinely thin — there isn't much for the model to recall.
The fix is harder but more rewarding: become part of the people growing the conversation. Substantive posts, threads, and discussions that argue the category's tradeoffs help everyone in the category, including you. Categories that grow loud get more AI recommendations than categories that stay quiet.
Cause 2: Your competitors are in the corpus and you aren't
Far more common: the category is discussed, but your name isn't part of those discussions. Competitors who launched on Hacker News, were debated on Reddit, or got mentioned in roundup posts are now part of the corpus. You are not.
The fix is straightforward in concept and slow in practice: be present in the same threads, with substantive comments that hold up over time. A handful of useful contributions over a few months will start moving the needle. Single-shot launches, on their own, usually don't.
- Find threads comparing your category — alternatives discussions, recommendation requests.
- Comment with substance: technical detail, honest tradeoffs, real workflow context.
- Mention your product where it genuinely fits, restrained.
- Repeat consistently, not in bursts.
Cause 3: You're in the corpus, but with weak signals
Sometimes the model has heard of you, but only in low-quality contexts: a one-line mention with no surrounding context, a thread that got buried, a single SEO blog post that nobody linked to.
The fix is to upgrade the signal quality. A well-argued reply in a high-engagement comparison thread carries more weight than ten passing mentions. Aim for the threads that other humans will read and link back to — not the ones that disappear into the void.
Cause 4: Your name is too generic or too new
If your product name is generic ("Stream," "Flow," "Pulse") the model may confuse you with other products of the same name. If you're new, you may not yet be in the training cutoff of the assistants people use most.
Generic-name fix: brand the surrounding context. "InsightScout (the buyer-intent tool)" reads more clearly than "InsightScout" alone. Repeated context tags help the model disambiguate.
